Advanced Placement Writing 2 is designed to help honors, gifted, and Advanced Placement students refine and expand their writing ability. Students actively prepare for the English Literature and Composition examination, which focuses on analysis of fiction and poems and discussion of literary concerns in major works of recognized literary merit. Students think critically as they read for clues related to intent, meaning, and technique. The ability to identify and analyze, as well as to use a variety of styles and conventions that characterize quality writing, is vital to students at this level. Both Advanced Placement Writing units involve close textual analysis, synthesis, and evaluation; clear, effective writing about literary passages; and ongoing development of appropriate, authentic writing voices and styles.

Part 1 emphasizes the writer as a craftsperson and enables students to discover the skills and techniques necessary for clear, effective prose. Part 2 provides intensive work with literary passages and explores characterization, diction, figurative language, point of view, tone, and structure. Part 3 focuses on poetry. Part 4 cross-relates works. Part 5 studies literary issues such as aesthetic.

Students make judgments about appropriate choices in wording, sentence structure, and overall style; move from the prewriting stage to the final process in writing literary analysis; approach poetry from various directions without reservations or preconceptions; and examine a single work in the context of other works. Students also respond to and write about the human experiences described in literature. Activities include timed writings and objective questions. Research suggestions include the use of the Internet and an appendix that lists print and online reference materials.
