The ten lessons in this unit deal with important topics in the history of America during the 1970s. The Arab Oil Embargo, the miniseries Roots, busing in Boston, Vietnamese immigration, and détente are examined in this unit. Also included are lessons on the trial of Lieutenant Calley for the My Lai Massacre, the career of the African-American tennis champion Arthur Ashe, the Watergate incident, Jim Jones and the Jonestown Massacre, and the struggle to pass the Equal Rights Amendment.
Academic activities include debates, cooperative learning, individual presentations, the completion of charts, analysis of cartoons, letter composition, role-playing, and group presentations.
