Decsription Activities Other Books in This Series

Creative Writing engages high school students in creating original poems and prose. Students learn how to translate personal experiences into well-written, creative pieces as they explore various poetic forms and then focus on prose pieces that range from verbal sketches and anecdotes to a complete short story. Evaluation and revision activities are included. Students are encouraged to track independent progress with rubrics for self-assessment. Lessons include Exploring the Sonnet Form, Transitional Devices, Parables—Yesterday and Today, and Writing Commercials.

Academic activities include using colorful modifiers; exploring poetry online; writing a patterned poem; writing a poem based on a model; compiling a class poetry magazine; using a branching organizer as a pre-writing tool; developing a paragraph using chronological, sequential, spatial, climactic, or cause-effect order; writing a short story; writing a greeting card; and exploring political cartoons.
