The unit helps students discover the appeal of early science fiction stories and gain an appreciation of science fiction as a special literary art form. Each story is developed by several lessons that focus on special aspects or themes of that particular story. Story selections include a variety of authors. The stories are suitable for high school students and feature a wide range of themes.

Students complete writing assignments, work in small groups, read, think, use critical and analytical reading skills, and utilize the text of the story. Supplementary materials feature ideas for culminating activities as well as reading quizzes and answer keys.
