This unit supplements American Literature courses with the study of writers of diverse ethnicity. Designed to enhance knowledge and to develop empathy, lessons expose students to works written by American writers of various racial and ethnic backgrounds. Selected works provide insight into the writers’ experiences of American society as members of smaller groups, but at the same time as members of humankind.
Activities engage students in thought and writing. Group work complements this unit’s message of relating to others with respect and understanding. Students read works by Amy Tan and Raymond Carver and explore the concepts of cultural icon, racial stereotypes, and the Rebel. Students also examine symbols, metaphors, and allusions, and explore universal themes such as family relationships, turning points, and community.
