This modern one-act tragedy is part of the Celtic Revival and an example of Naturalism. The setting is a locale off the west coast of Ireland, and the story focuses on the hardships of a single family. The play poignantly presents the bleak and difficult lifestyle of the Irish peasants. Through the technique of foreshadowing at the opening moments of the play, the audience is aware that the women must face the fact that their son and brother, Michael, died in a storm at sea. The tragedy is further heightened when the women must allow his brother Bartleby take over business and follow course.

Students explore the origins of theater and are introduced to Celtic theater, including an examination of the Irish Literary Movement. They perform research and participate in creative writing; biographical writing, and archetypal criticism. Students learn to recognize story origins.
