In today’s rapidly changing society, it remains essential to examine values. Advances in communication and technology have unalterably changed the way we live. We are all constantly bombarded with new information and confusing messages. This unit encourages listening, observing, questioning, and evaluating, existing values. It is intended to provide guidelines to help young people, searching for themselves in an increasingly complex world which requires continual redefinition, to be their own persons.
This unit starts with a diagnostic survey to help surface areas of greatest student interest. Throughout the course of the study of values, students keep journals to allow them to reflect on each day’s lesson. Brainstorming facilitates immediate involvement and a wealth of ideas relevant to the topic of study. Small group discussions allow all students to participate. Role-playing permits students to see a situation from other perspectives. Exercises provided on the handouts present situations for students to consider. Optional activities extend what students have learned.
