This unit gives students the tools and the knowledge they need to survive in the world. Lessons provide an overview of the basic principles of economics, examine the roles and relationships between business and labor, trace the influence and impact of financial institutions and the government on the economy, and explore the influence of America’s economy on students’ personal finances.
Since most economics courses are taught in one semester, the unit is divided into six easily digestible segments: Basics in Economics, Business and Labor, Financial Institutions, Government and the Economy, Personal Finance, and Global and Ethical Perspectives. Reading selections for each part help students grasp micro- and macro-economics quickly. Reading questions called “Pressing Questions” challenge students to incorporate what they read into their own world while providing a useful link to the next topic. Handouts provide a launching pad for thinking and lively classroom conversations.
Sold separately, the student workbook of the same title provides a handy work text for students.
Students participate in short research projects, an extended stock project, legal analysis, graphic work with supply and demand charts, business page analysis, monetary policy practice, political discussions, 1040EZ tax form analysis, and money management.
