Recommended for Grades 11-12
This book about conscience leads students to understand what it means to be a disciple of Jesus in the Catholic tradition. It enables students to recognize that Christian morality is not a matter of rules and regulations, but rather a response to the invitation of a loving God who invites us into relationship and to share in the life of the kingdom. The unit invites students into a deeper familiarity with Scripture, which is the basis of understanding God’s will and the nature of good and evil. Moreover, the book reinforces religious literacy by incorporating the teaching of the Catechism of the Catholic Church and the 2,000-year-old Catholic moral tradition. In addition, as the subtitle conveys, this resource manual helps students develop the skills of moral decision making by providing opportunities to practice and reflect upon those skills.
Lesson titles include the following: Morality—The Call to Be Fully Human, The Nature of Conscience, Influences on Conscience, The Teaching and Example of Jesus, Sin and Evil, and Grace—The Call to Holiness.
This minicourse edition offers students opportunities to read scriptural passages and therefore see the Bible as an important tool in the development of a rich and mature faith life. The unit includes readings, discussion guides, and reflection sheets. Students create a collage that depicts various positive and negative influences in their lives; examine the Ten Commandments, and rewrite each one to make its underlying value more evident; and participate in a prayer service and an examination of conscience.
