Recommended for Grades 11-12

This unit enables high school students to connect daily living with Catholic moral principles and values grounded in respect for human life. The resource also offers strategies for putting moral principles into action. Through these materials, students are encouraged to unite themselves with the Church’s social mission and ultimately work to bring about a more just and peaceful world through Jesus Christ.

A goal of this unit is to introduce students to the wealth of Catholic teaching on social justice. A special effort has been made to include excerpts from church documents in the hope that students will be motivated to become more familiar with the directives of popes, bishops, and councils. This unit also offers suggested prayers where appropriate.

Lessons titles include the following: Discipleship and Social Justice, The Dignity of the Human Person, Attacks on Human Dignity, War and Peace, Care for God’s Creation, and A Spirituality of Justice.

This minicourse edition offers students opportunities to read scriptural passages that lead to recognition of how Catholic social teaching flows from the teaching and ministry of Jesus. The unit contains readings, discussion guides, and reflection sheets. In addition, students create posters and slogans to raise consciousness about homelessness; compose ten commandments for responsible stewardship of the earth; reflect on issues such as abortion, euthanasia, organ donation, and capital punishment; create a poster to call people to promote the Gospel of Life and reject the Culture of Death; and participate in a justice prayer service.
