Ninth grade teachers and catechists cannot safely assume that students share a common vocabulary and a common understanding of Catholic basics. This book of detailed lesson plans enables teachers to provide students from varied religious formation backgrounds with a unifying study of the Catholic heritage. This resource is not a catechism, and it is not a comprehensive treatment of the Catholic faith. It is an introduction to the total curriculum of the Discipleship Series. It leads students to a shared vocabulary and shared understanding of basic beliefs. It presents topics that will receive fuller treatment as students continue their religious education. The procedures are easily adjusted to meet students’ needs.

Forty lesson plans focus on the foundations of the Catholic faith. The text consists of seven parts: Getting Started—All Are Welcome, Considering the Mystery of the Catholic Church, Choosing Holiness, Holiness in the World, Prayer in a Catholic Context, Scripture in a Catholic Context, and Tradition—Something Which Is Known to Have Been from the Beginning. Lessons present the early followers of Jesus, the Catholic vision of life, the Ten Commandments, the Eucharist, the Old Testament, the Holy Trinity, and more. This resource includes many references to the Catechism of the Catholic Church and is to be used in conjunction with the Student Exercise Book by the same title.
