From apostolic times to contemporary ones, the Church’s history is one of pilgrimage, a journey that begins and ends with Jesus. This forty-lesson book combines basic elements of Church history and ecclesiology. Students begin to understand the historical roots of the teachings, traditions, and practices central to Catholic life today. This unit helps students to gain insight into how theology has developed, how our Church works today, and the important role that students play in forming the Church of tomorrow. Students come away with an understanding of the nature, function, and ministry of our Church.
The text consists of five parts: From Jerusalem to Rome; From Preaching to Doctrine; From Monarchy to Reform; From Luther to Trent; and From Modernism to the Modern Era. This resource includes many references to the Catechism of the Catholic Church and is to be used in conjunction with the Student Exercise Book by the same title.
Teachers guide student discussions, conduct brainstorming sessions, and encourage students to reflect on experiences. In addition, teachers guide students in examining the faith statements of the Nicene Creed, direct students to paraphrase a prayer attributed to St. Thomas Aquinas, and describe the ministry of the pope.
