This unit familiarizes students with annual deficits and the accumulated national debt. They learn about the impact of the U.S. debt on Americans’ lives. As they progress through the unit, students explore the history of the United States’ spending, and discover how the federal government creates budgets, collects revenue, makes expenditures, and borrows money.
Academic activities include reading and answering questions in writing, small- and large-group discussions about economic and political issues related to the deficit and debt, analysis of the debt’s effect on standard of living, evaluation of solutions to the deficit and debt, presentations, debt calculation, and role-play. Supplementary materials feature a bibliography and helpful Web sites.
