This unit helps students explore issues facing today’s American worker. They study the global economy, plant closings, the introduction of new technologies, participatory programs for workers, health and safety issues, problems facing women workers, on-the-job training, political participation, and difficult issues related to older or retired workers. The culminating lesson integrates these issues and helps students analyze them. It can be a useful assessment instrument, although the final lesson features a traditional test.
Students read selections, both primary and secondary sources, answer questions, and analyze workplace issues. They write letters, conduct oral history interviews, draft legislation, complete maps, and role-play to learn about and evaluate relevant issues in the workplace.
