This well-researched and balanced curriculum for high school students presents the Holocaust in light of the full history of Jewish-Christian relations and examines how the relationship between the Roman Catholic Church and the Jewish community has improved since the Second Vatican Council.

The Teacher Manual presents suggestions for teaching each chapter, goals and vocabulary, suggested responses for review questions and exercises, discussion topics, and many activities for enrichment and extension. Also included is a summary of what Catholics should know about Judaism, a set of guidelines for interreligious dialogue, a chronology of key events related to the Holocaust, an extensive bibliography, and an annotated videography. Chapters include the following: The Separation of Christianity from Judaism; The Portrayal of Jews in Early Christian Writings; Christianity’s Discrimination and Legislation against Jews; “Racial” Antisemitism and Pseudoscientific Racial Theories; The Rise of Hitler and the Nazi Party in Germany; Anti-Jewish Measures in Nazi Germany; The Nazis’ “Final Solution” for the Jewish Problem; Protectors and Rescuers; The Response of the American Government to the Holocaust; Responses of the Catholic Church to the Holocaust; Jewish-Christian Relations since the Holocaust; and Lessons of the Holocaust. Materials are flexible and can be used as the basis for a semester or yearlong course on Jewish-Christian relations and the Holocaust. Materials are highly adaptable and can be used in a cross-curricular manner among religion, literature, and social studies courses, opening the door to dialogue across the subject areas.

Student materials are not included in the Teacher Manual.

Enrichment activities include viewing and discussing various pertinent films; discussing the use of propaganda to incite hatred and fear; researching and presenting examples of how the Nazi Party modified some religious rituals and prayers in order to express faith in Adolf Hitler and in Nazi ideology; reading and discussing books such as Anne Frank’s Diary of a Young Girl, Elie Wiesel’s Night, and Viktor Frankl’s Man’s Search for Meaning; and discovering diocesan activities intended to promote positive relations between Catholics and Jews.
