Christ calls people to discipleship, to follow him in love. As disciples, we hear the Gospel and learn that we are also called to minister to one another. The chief work of ministry is to gather and form the community of disciples. Ministry involves listening, praying, and teaching. It requires doing whatever can be done to awaken love for Christ and to direct that love toward the service of the Gospel. The six sessions in this resource examine the theological foundation of ministry, types of service, and essential skills needed in the lives of ministers. Participants consider aspects of ministry in the Church today which are common to all the baptized. This study focuses on taking what the Gospel says about ministry and applying that information to participants’ own lives. Note that this book does not directly address ordained ministry, but rather emphasizes specific aspects of ministry that the laity exercise.
Session titles are as follows: The Gospel Call to Ministry; Forms of Ministry; Focus on the Minister; Ministry Right Here, Right Now; The Prayerful-Active Minister; and The Give and Take of Ministry.
Each session begins with a suggested method for lectionary prayer and ends with a closing prayer that may include reciting the Lord’s Prayer, participating in a simple ritual, or formulating prayers of petition. Sessions include presentations of pertinent information, periods of personal reflection, and discussions for both large and small groups.
