The functions of leadership in lay ministry are similar to the functions of leadership anywhere. Leading others is a multifaceted process. It includes managing, mentoring, and transforming. Participants in the six sessions of this unit are guided in practicing these leadership functions through simulation exercises. Some sessions assume that most adults have already developed skills applicable to ministerial leadership. The sessions consider how those skills might be used in visioning and goal setting, in communication and collaboration, and in implementation and evaluation of ministries. These three faces of leadership are shown to be a fixed part of progress toward the goals in ministry. Leadership as ministry is challenging and includes elements from the culture in which it is exercised. How do leaders promote harmony in the midst of globalization and diversity? How do they model stability and integrity when credible leadership is rare? What can soften the clash between individualism and community? Special emphasis is placed on these issues.

Session titles are as follows: Leadership as Ministry; Focus on the Leader; Focus on Leadership; The Leadership Process; Leadership in a Parish Environment; and Leadership Challenges.

Each session begins with a suggested method of lectionary prayer and ends with a closing prayer that may include inviting spontaneous prayers of intercession, participating in a brief prayer service, journaling, using a theological reflection process, reciting the Lord’s Prayer, or reflecting on a scriptural passage. Sessions include presentations of pertinent information, periods of personal reflection, and discussions for both large and small groups.
