This resource helps the Christian community provide to senior citizens care, support, education, opportunities for meaningful ministry, and a sense of belonging. Part 1, which contains seven workshop sessions that employ Scripture as a basis for prayer and reflection, focuses on people who are in the early and middle stages of aging, retired people who are still active in the community. Workshop titles in this section include the following: Attitudes toward Aging; Financial Aspects of Aging; Aging and the Call to Reconcile; and The Tasks of Retirement.
Part 2 of this manual, which consists of six workshop sessions, provides training for people who minister to frail and homebound seniors. Participants in these workshops—caregivers of the elderly—are presented with specific needs of elderly people, needs that they, as caregivers, are likely to encounter. Workshop titles in this section include the following: Fulfilling Basic Human Needs; Acquiring Safety and Security; The Sense of Belonging and Membership; and The Religious Experience of Aging.
Part 3 offers suggestions for follow-up activities, many of which involve intergenerational participation and focus on spending time with elderly people rather than merely doing things for them. The unit concludes with a selected bibliography and a list of pertinent audiovisual materials.
