The Eucharist is the heart of belief of Catholic Christians. It is life, food for the journey, the covenant of the New Testament, conversion, justice, reconciliation, perseverance, mission, and much more. The function of Eucharistic ministers in the Catholic community is important, and their call to minister invites them to grow in their discipleship with the Lord. This call is not limited to keeping the schedule for distributing the Eucharist during Mass or to the ill or homebound. It is an outright urging from the Holy Spirit to plunge into new dimensions of relationship with Jesus and with the Christian community. It means a fresh chance to be, in ways that the Lord will reveal, what they share with others who come to the table. In eight spiritual formation sessions, ministers discover this invitation to spiritual growth. Accepting this invitation will, in turn, strengthen the quality of their ministry.
Titles for the scripturally-based sessions are as follows: The Bread of Life—John 6:48-59; The Bread of the Journey—Luke 24:13-35; The Bread of the Covenant—Luke 22:14-20; The Bread of Conversion—Luke 5:27-32; The Bread of Justice—Luke 19:1-10; The Bread of Reconciliation—Luke 7:36-50; The Bread of Perseverance—Luke 22:28-30; and The Bread of Mission—Luke 9:10-17.
Sessions begin with prayer or song and end with a prayer service. They also include the following activities: proclamation of Scripture, reflections on scriptural passages, opportunities for personal reflection and journaling, and participation in small group discussions. Time for socialization is also built in to the sessions.
