This book considers the many ways of understanding the body of Christ. While belief in the Eucharist is key, this resource also reflects on other ways we experience the body of Christ, some being as the word made flesh, in the transformation of the dead and resurrected body, and as the union of worshipers.
The Body of Christ uses Gospel texts and early Christian documents to show what the early Christians believed about their bodies and their world. Those understandings have shaped Catholic beliefs about the body of Christ that we strive to understand today.
The Body of Christ consists of six sessions; each session is designed to fit a one-and-a-half to two-hour time frame. A suggested time schedule appears in the front of the book. Session titles are as follows: The Body of Christ in History; The Body of Christ in Death; The Body of Christ Risen from the Dead; The Body of Christ in His Members; The Body of Christ in the Eucharist; and The Body of Christ in the World to Come.
Prayer begins and concludes each of the six sessions. The sessions also include periods of reflective input, conversation time to respond to questions that shed light on the adult faith journey, silent reflection and journaling, and an invitation to action which encourages the conversion that true growth in faith requires. Time for socialization is also built in to the sessions.
