In light of Vatican II, and a changing culture with better and faster technologies for communication and information transfer, church leaders need to adapt. Parishes need to empower their future leaders to understand how Jesus exercised spiritual leadership in his life and ministry. Leaders need not only understand the spiritual leadership of Jesus, but also internalize these gospel values and transform them into behaviors and actions. This is the vision outlined by this manual.
Sections include:
· Parish Gathering
· Parish Mission Statement
· Pastoral Plan
· Parish Retreat
Each section contains background material, implementation steps, and handouts. Sections give opportunity for parishioners to understand the mission of the parish and determine unmet needs; to develop a specific focus, rooted in Scripture and based on Jesus’ ministry. This focus should direct all parish activities and serves as a guide for developing goals and objectives. This focus helps to create a parish pastoral plan by analyzing parish data, setting objectives and priorities, and implementing the plan collaboratively to maintain vitality.
There are two appendices. The first is a retreat model where individuals in a parish examine the mission of Jesus and the way Jesus leads others. The second is a workshop that helps leaders to develop active listening skills.
