Adolescents are struggling to understand what they have learned earlier by rote or in family practice. They may be questioning all authority: parents, teachers, the Church. This book guides students through questions and doubts and helps them to seek truth. Students are given opportunities to explore their own beliefs as part of their personal faith journey. Sessions begin with a basic understanding of the meaning of faith and how it develops. As students gain understanding, sessions focus on the Church, the Scriptures, and those who lived extraordinary lives of faith: Mary and the saints. Students explore the sacraments as encounters with Jesus that can strengthen their commitment to him.
This minicourse is adaptable to school or parish settings and can be used alone or as a complement to the religion text. Each session is approximately one hour in length. The sessions contain objectives, notes to the teacher, core concepts, lists of materials needed, step-by-step procedures, handouts, and optional activities. The materials are adaptable to students’ needs and learning styles. Activities such as discussion, art, games, research, role-playing, problem solving, music, journaling, prayer, outreach, and service all foster peer interaction and acceptance.
