This program is geared toward intermediate-age children who have experienced the divorce and remarriage of one or both parents. Children discuss and work through topics such as jealousy, living in two homes, their feelings about their mom’s or dad’s remarriage, and finding the positive side of stepfamilies. The program recognizes and builds upon the strength and resiliency of youth and can be conducted in a school setting or adapted to less formal settings.
The Student Workbook is a record of students’ feelings and progress over the course of the program. It offers carefully stated discussion questions, personal surveys, engaging activity pages, and art projects.
Students work in small groups in which they can comfortably express their thoughts and feelings. They engage in activities that are creative, educational, and sensitive to their situation. Activities include designing t-shirts, creating visuals, designing family shields with mottoes, unscrambling vocabulary words pertaining to the grief journey, and completing a word search of terms related to stepfamilies.
