This program is geared toward intermediate-age children who have experienced the divorce and remarriage of one or both parents. Children discuss and work through topics such as jealousy, living in two homes, their feelings about their mom’s or dad’s remarriage, and finding the positive side of stepfamilies. The program recognizes and builds upon the strength and resiliency of youth and can be conducted in a school setting or adapted to settings less formal.
This unit is useful to teachers and parents facilitating support groups. The Leader’s Manual includes preliminary notes, detailed procedures, material lists, introductory activities, and resource materials. Each session is designed for forty-five minutes to an hour.
Students work in small groups in which they can comfortably express their thoughts and feelings. They discuss the concept of stepfamily and realize that stresses in stepfamilies are also found in traditional families. Students examine the grief journey, the struggle to be loyal to both parents, and the issue of authority within a stepfamily. Also, students discuss ways that school and grandparents can be sources of help.
