Students study characters, their values, and consequences of their choices; make characters’ situations come alive through oral reports, song and poem writing, and role playing; and analyze sensory images, dialogue, themes, and narrator’s viewpoint. They also research historical elements of the novel and examine their personal ancestral backgrounds.

Supplemental activities include study and discussion guides, an identification quiz, and an essay test, with answer keys for each.
