This manual was developed for use with junior and senior high school students; however, it is adaptable to counsel younger students and to train the trainers. Students need help learning how to handle daily conflicts, manage anger, and get along with each other. Conflict resolution skills are tools to facilitate a dynamic human process of creative problem-solving. No two people would solve the same problem exactly the same way because each person has a unique approach. Students practice techniques and skills that help them deal with their own disputes and to mediate disputes among others. Lessons focus on communication, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills.
The unit is divided into 3 parts. In Part 1, Understanding Conflict, students examine conflict as a natural part of life. In Part 2, Conflict Resolution Skills, students focus on communication skills, such as clarifying statements and establishing a win/win atmosphere; critical thinking skills, including distinguishing motivations and identifying feelings; and problem-solving skills, such as generating options and negotiating. Part 3, Peer Mediation, helps students put the skills to work through mediation role-plays. Supplementary materials include the language of conflict resolution, mediation agreement and follow-up forms, materials for the peer mediation advisory board, and a self-evaluation.
