Valuing Others is designed to help students identify and articulate those values which motivate them in their response to others. This unit may be used as a companion to Searching for Yourself, as an independent course on values at the secondary level, or as a resource for teachers who wish to integrate values instruction into other areas of the curriculum.
This unit starts with a diagnostic survey to help surface areas of greatest student interest. Throughout the course of the study of values, students keep journals to allow them to reflect on each day’s lesson. Brainstorming facilitates immediate involvement and a wealth of ideas relevant to the topic of study. Small group discussions allow all students to participate. Role-playing permits students to see a situation from other perspectives. Exercises provided on the handouts present situations for students to consider. Optional activities extend what students have learned.
