The Martian Chronicles consists of twenty-six short, science-fantasy stories with brief bridges connecting them. The stories span twenty-seven years, but Bradbury’s social commentary can be shared by today’s readers. Stories emphasize imagination over realism.
In this unit students examine fantasy; create myths; compare characters and categorize them; analyze the significance of dreams; assume the role of a Martian; examine ethics; explore the various bridges Bradbury uses to connect stories; do close textual readings; respond to poetry; study the extended metaphor; compose essays, myths, descriptive compositions, and journals. Supplementary materials feature study guides for each story, essay questions, and a list of five-minute topics that can be used for quick-writes or journals.
