The Center for Learning's teaching supplements strengthen students' writing skills and foster the development of each student's unique voice. These materials help students at all levels build confidence in their ability to express their ideas clearly and thoughtfully.

Basic Composition

Teacher Guide   Student Book

Basic Composition is based on the premise that writing is an enjoyable process that enhances students' ability to effectively express ideas. Materials provide a systematic approach, which helps students master writing an essay.

Advanced Composition

Teacher Guide   Student Book

This unit concentrates on the more advanced skills of composition while incorporating work on common sentence-writing problems. Materials guide students as they explore the process of writing a variety of essay types.

Writing 1: Learning the Process

This unit introduces students to writing process theory and builds their enjoyment of expressing ideas in written form. Lessons enhance students' use of grammar and mechanics through the steps of prewriting, drafting, conferencing, revising, editing, and publishing. Click here for more info.

Writing 2: Becoming a Writer

Writing 2 helps students learn and implement diverse composition modes like third person narration, description, exposition, and persuasion. Students also develop personal writing styles and become comfortable writing in more demanding forms such as autobiography, response writing, and critical analysis. Click here for more info.

Advanced Placement Writing 1*

Advanced Placement Writing 1 is designed to help honors, gifted, and Advanced Placement students prepare for the English Language and Composition examination. Emphasizing the reading/writing connection, this unit focuses on nonfiction and on syntax and diction. Click here for more info.

Advanced Placement Writing 2*

Advanced Placement Writing 2 helps prepare students for the English Literature and Composition examination. Lessons enhance their ability to analyze fiction and poems and to discuss literary concerns in major works. Click here for more info.

Journalism

Students expand and improve upon their writing skills by learning how to accurately compose news stories. They practice researching, interviewing, and note-taking in order to write articles, features, editorials, columns, captions, and headlines. Click here for more info.

Creative Writing

Invite students to draw from their personal experiences to create original poems and prose. Lessons explore poetic forms and focus on prose pieces ranging from verbal sketches and anecdotes to complete short stories. Writing Short Stories

This unit builds students' understanding of short fiction by emphasizing characterization, plot development, setting, and the generation of ideas. Lessons also act as a guide as students write their own short stories. Click here for more info.

Daily Writing Topics
