Description:
A fourteen-year-old girl is left with the responsibility of caring for her siblings in the isolated Appalachian mountain region. Mary Call, the oldest sibling, has promised her father that upon his death, she would keep her siblings up on the mountain and refuse any outside help. At first, siblings Romey, Ima Dean, and Devola gather herbs to sell in town, but when winter hits, the family faces extreme challenges.
