Description:
In Things Fall Apart, Achebe creates a world made up of nine villages, each with individual characteristics as well as customs common to the entire district. Events occur that affect only one place, but ceremonies like marriages and festivals bring villages together in celebration. Fear and superstition pervade life, yet these people have traditions that have developed over the centuries, providing an ordered society. These are not savages in loincloths, although headhunting and war are acknowledged activities of the not-too-distant past. The debilitating effect of foreign intrusion on a culture is emphasized.

In this unit, students examine setting; research using an encyclopedia; complete a project such as collecting proverbs for a booklet or creating a child’s book; discuss life among the Ibo people; discuss in small groups Achebe’s accomplishment in Part One of the book; role-play; study the history of Nigeria; explore the function of a frame story; and improve reading comprehension through the use of study guides.
