Readers witness the conflicting emotions of Shabanu, an eleven-year-old girl who discovers that growing up is difficult, especially in the face of adversity. Shabanu’s experiences and lessons illustrate the power of perseverance, hard work, family loyalty, and fidelity. The novel is set in Pakistan, specifically the Cholistan desert, and provides an accurate representation of Pakistani culture and traditions.

Activities:

Students examine characterization, analyze and respond to poetry, and write creatively.
