Description:

This 1942 novel reveals the absurd. The main character, Meursault, reacts to the news of his mother’s death; murders an Arab on a hot beach; and is imprisoned, tried, and sentenced to death. Feeling himself a stranger in his world, Meursault questions the meaning of existence.

Activities:

Students analyze the roots and concepts of existentialism and the absurd, make presentations on philosophers and philosophies, and explore art that reflects the theme of life’s meaning. They also study characters, experiment with reader’s theater, conduct peer surveys, and focus on writing.
