The pre-Victorian novelist Jane Austen sets Sense and Sensibility in late eighteenth-century English society, and touches upon the inequity of British inheritance laws, specifically for females. An additional focus is the role of social classification and the importance of honesty in relationships. The novel stresses the universality of love, hope, disappointment, betrayal, survival, justice, and family.

Activities:

Students identify character traits, find examples of different types of conflict, predict outcomes, and research literary allusions. They also write creatively, conduct interviews, complete an Internet assignment, and compare the movie with the novel.
