Description:
Timothy of the Cay continues the story of Phillip from The Cay, telling of his adaptation to life back in civilized Curacao and his decision of whether or not to undergo a dangerous operation to restore his eyesight. Parallel to this is the prequel to The Cay in which Timothy’s life from the time he is a twelve-year-old boy in the slums of Back o’All, St. Thomas, to his last position as crewman aboard the torpedoed ship, the Hato. Timothy grows in strength and wisdom as he meets the challenges of the sea and the injustices of racial prejudice. Themes of overcoming prejudice and interdependence with others are portrayed.
Activities:
In this unit, students study plot, characterization, allegory, and theme. They focus on the literary devices of imagery, dialect, and symbolism. They consider denotation and connotation and examine character development. Other activities include discovering and interpreting themes; giving an individual presentation based upon art, drama, social studies, or writing; writing personal essays and an original adventure story; and responding in writing to the novel’s themes.
