Description:

Four sixth graders and their teacher are chosen to represent their class in an Academic Bowl competition. The diverse group of students from various ethnic and cultural backgrounds with different interests alternately narrate the story of their struggle to find acceptance among their peers and family while retaining their individual identity. A Newberry Book Award winner, the novel addresses self-discovery, prejudice, and diversity.

Activities:

Students examine character development, literary elements of irony, symbolism, point of view, plot, and theme. They also research topics of interest to each character, such as calligraphy, sea turtles, formal tea, and family history; create graphic organizers; and select a team, design a team t-shirt, and participate in an academic bowl.
