A part-Native American girl, Salamanca Tree Hiddle, sets out on a journey with her grandparents to find her mother; she struggles with her fears, the sorrow of loss, and the need for acceptance. Along the way, Sal tells the story of Phoebe Winterbottom, a girl whose experience with loss mirrors her own. Presented in a series of messages left at Phoebe’s house, the narrative includes themes that focus on wisdom, empathy, perspective, appreciating what one has, and the strength to face challenges.



Activities:

Students study similes, connotation, and expressive language. They also develop vocabulary, analyze poetry, write journal entries, complete creative writing exercises, work in small groups, and critique peers.
