Description:
Two 1950s-era South Carolina children, a brother and sister, are stranded in the Australian outback after a plane crash. They encounter an aboriginal boy who is engaged in his walkabout—a six-month period of isolation as an initiation into manhood. Broader themes in the story present an initiation into tolerance and survival in an alien, hostile, and demanding world.

Activities:

Students study theme, tone, style, setting, conflict, and point of view. They also write a plot summary, develop vocabulary and writing skills, analyze characters, interpret poetry, and role-play.

A final evaluation with answer key is provided.
