This memoir describes the Cultural Revolution in China. The novel opens with a strong, happy family and a young girl, Ji-li, who seems to have a charmed life. As the novel progresses, Ji-li finds the Cultural Revolution is not what she expected, and she faces many conflicts involving her beliefs and her family. Her story illustrates a turbulent time in history for both a nation and a family.
Activities:
Students complete research and have opportunities to work in large and small groups. They dramatize events from the novel and depict life in China. They complete several writing activities, including persuasive, expository, creative, and formal writing. They study literary techniques such as conflict, characterization, theme, and plot.
