Red Scarf Girl/Chinese Cinderella
This memoir describes the Cultural Revolution in China. Red Scarf Girl opens with a strong, happy family and a young girl, Ji-li, who seems to have a charmed life. As the novel progresses, Ji-li finds the Cultural Revolution is not what she expected, and she faces many conflicts involving her beliefs and her family. Her story illustrates a turbulent time in history for both a nation and a family.
Chinese Cinderella describes the experiences of a young girl who was raised in a way very much like the Cinderella of traditional fairy tales. Because her mother died giving birth to her, her father and older siblings blame her. Her stepmother is evil, and she has an aunt who is equivalent to a fairy godmother. Throughout the story, the protagonist deals with feelings of neglect and the realization that she must control her own destiny.
