Sister Carrie is set in late nineteenth-century America, with the main backdrops of Chicago and New York City. Carrie first struggles to support herself by working in poor conditions in a Chicago shoe factory, only to become ill and subsequently unemployed. Seeking better opportunities, she is faced with a host of temptations and moral choices. She has theatrical talent and ambitions, and she eventually becomes successful, although not fulfilled, in New York City.
Students examine characterization, themes, and writing style. They also focus on setting and Theodore Dreiser’s commentary on the setting. Students participate in written analysis as well as in-depth discussions. They are given several avenues to explore the elements of the novel. Activities include creative writing, artwork, literary criticism, a debate, presentations, and a film review.
Supplementary materials include quizzes with answer keys and essay questions.
