The Mayor of Casterbridge describes the rustic life of
nineteenth-century Dorchester to the reader. The story’s shocking opening scene
rivets readers’ attention. This novel is a great example of Victorian
literature as well as the serialized novels popular at the time. Despite sophisticated
vocabulary and complicated plot twists, the tale of Michael Henchard’s tragic
life make him a recognizable and fascinating character.
