During the era of American
Reconstruction, the spirit of a murdered child haunts the home of a former
slave. This ghost makes life difficult for Sethe; however, she finds comfort in
believing that the spirit is that of her own dead baby—never named—known as
Beloved. This novel portrays the struggles of ex-slaves dealing with the trauma
of slavery, racism, aggression, and broken families.
