Advanced Placement Poetry

A focus on poetry is essential preparation for the literature and composition exam. Students often focus on the story element of fiction and drama; as a result, they may become disoriented when confronted with the minimalistic or expressionistic qualities of poetry that does not provide an obvious narrative. Advanced Placement Poetry provides a systematic and integrated approach to engage students in the subtleties and satisfactions that poetry can provide. This unit is independent of other textbooks. Selected poems from a variety of literary eras and poets are featured on reproducible handouts. Sample timed writings and advanced placement-type objective questions are included.

Student Activities

Activities challenge students’ logic, creativity, insight, and technical skills. Part 1 provides a systematic presentation of the theoretical basis of poetic discourse. Students address questions that are central to the theory of poetry. Part 2 focuses on the various parts of a poem. Students strengthen the interactive alliance between the reader and the text. Part 3 examines the varieties of patterns that are either imposed on or emerge from the total poem. Part 4 encourages students to expand their own interpretations of poetry through the selective reading of literary criticism.
