This autobiographical account of the growth and life of two black sisters during the past one hundred years in America focuses on black society and the struggle to achieve personal goals while retaining family values.

Activities:

Students participate in small- and large-group discussions; interview; examine affirmative action; compare and contrast the Delany sisters; prepare an oral history; research black society and its contributions to American society as a whole; and research life as a member of the older segment of American citizens; and examine life in Harlem during the Harlem Renaissance. Supplementary materials include research topics, suggestions for incorporating other media, and activities for further reading.
