Edmond Rostand’s drama Cyrano de Bergerac is a combination of comedy, heroism, romance, and poetry. Rostand paints a lively story of the seventeenth-century playwright. Students become sensitive to Cyrano, and they become aware of others’ self-consciousness and sensitivity as well as the possibility of unselfish love. Attention is given in this curriculum unit to guide students through the French names, the poetry, and the multitude of characters.

Activities:

Students conduct character analysis on the main and secondary characters. They prepare research for a debate. They complete exercises to enhance their understanding of symbolism and imagery. Students study the use of comedic devices in the play. They are given ample opportunities for essay writing and role playing.
