Description:

An ideal introduction to the genre of science fiction, Among the Hidden explores mature themes in a nonthreatening context. Set in a futuristic society dominated by a totalitarian government, these two books highlight how one young man struggles to overcome the challenges he faces as a “shadow child”—an illegal third child hidden by his family from the rest of the world. As a new housing development is erected, Luke is no longer even permitted to play in the woods behind his home. Faced with the discovery of another shadow child, a girl who lives in a home with two other children, Luke considers the risk of making contact with her.

Activities:

Students examine symbolism, figurative language, and theme; explore character profiles and methods of characterization; practice critical thinking/responding; research using the Internet; interview family members; and conduct a survey and present the results to the class. They also write a poem, comparison-contrast paragraphs, and an intercalary scenario.

Lessons feature comprehension questions that can be used as a study guide.
