Description:
This narrative is based on a folktale a thousand years old that originated in Iraq. Buran is the daughter of Malik, a shopkeeper who has no sons. When Malik becomes too ill to work, necessity urges his intelligent, educated, and restless daughter Buran to disguise herself as a boy and become a trader. She saves her family from destitution, finds good husbands for her sisters, and eventually wins the heart of a handsome prince.



Activities:
The objectives of this unit are designed to familiarize students with Middle Eastern culture and geography. Skills include using textual support for arguments and understanding the effect of point of view.
