Description:
A Gothic romance seen from narrator’s point of view is a tale of a dream that the narrator has of a ruined mansion called Manderley. Supernatural powers transport the dreamer to a place surrounded by giant trees with naked, intertwined branches, bare and ugly. The Gothic setting seems like the illusions created by the imagination and fears of the young Mrs. de Winter who lives under the sinister influence of a dead woman whose name is written in bold strokes on almost everything the young woman sees and touches. The novel demonstrates the impact of past events on present life as it reveals the mystery surrounding the death of the first Mrs. de Winter and the curious spell that she has cast upon Manderley.
