Description:
In the seven-volume fairy tale set against a World War II background, C. S. Lewis creates a simple allegory and anthropomorphic animal story in which the intellect reinforces imagination. The indirect introduction to elements of Christianity combines Joseph Campbell’s monomyth and Jungian archetypes. With Lewis’s economy of word, setting, mood, and absorbing conflict, the series creates a suspenseful tale—a classic for all ages.
Activities:
In this unit, students study the World War II era. They examine literary terms including biblical allusion, motif, theme, and irony. They discuss Plato’s theory of images. They examine a map of Narnia and other settings. Other activities have students complete a crossword, a word search, and vocabulary exercises. They participate in map activities. Students explore the cyclical nature of the monomyth, identify the themes of appearance versus reality and memory, write a short essay, analyze the role of food and Narnian time in the novel, and explore characterization.
The unit features tests and answer keys for each book, a glossary of literary terms, and a chronology of C. S. Lewis’s life.
